11:24Now PlayingWorld News: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a strong message on Russia sanctions as global tensions continue to rise amid President Donald Trump’s escalating Iran war.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Bardufoss on Friday , Norway, alongside Norwegian leaders, Carney made clear that Canada supports maintaining strict pressure on Moscow.
“Canada's position is to maintain sanctions on Russia, including on the shadow fleet, which is moving this oil,” Carney said, referring to vessels used to bypass international restrictions on Russian oil exports.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed the stance and revealed that most G7 leaders support keeping sanctions in place. “As you all know, we had a videoconference with the G7 leaders on Wednesday, and six out of seven were clearly of the opinion we should not release the sanctions against Russia,” Merz said.
He also expressed surprise at Washington’s reported move to ease some restrictions. “We were a little bit surprised that we heard this morning that the American government decided differently. This is definitely not our view,” Merz added.
The remarks highlight growing transatlantic tensions over Russia policy, with several Western leaders insisting that sanctions must remain until Moscow’s actions are addressed.
