By December 23rd 1944, Joachim Peiper and Kampfgruppe Peiper were finished. The most feared SS battlegroup of the Battle of the Bulge had fought its way deep into the Ardennes — only to grind to a halt halfway to the Meuse, surrounded in the small Belgian hamlet of La Gleize.

WW2 historians James Holland and Al Murray walk the ground across three decisive locations: Stavelot, where American engineers and infantry held the vital bridge; Cheneux, where the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment launched a brutal night attack that drove the SS out of the village; and La Gleize itself — where Peiper abandoned his tanks, his wounded, and his equipment, and slipped away on foot through the Ardennes forest.

This is the story of how America destroyed the finest armoured battlegroup Germany sent west.
