1.) The U.S. lettuce industry is calling on Congress to end the partial government shutdown that has stopped most Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food safety inspections. During the past year, five people died and hundreds of others were sickened from E.coli linked to romaine lettuce.
2.) A federal judge in New York has struck down a proposal to include a question about U.S. citizenship to the 2020 census. Critics argue the question would discourage non-citizens from participating and would lead to an inaccurate count of the US population.
3.) Vice President Mike Pence's wife Karen will teach elementary art classes two days a week at Immanuel Christian School in Virginia. The private school, which enrolls kindergartners through either graders, has a policy that bans gay students, parents, and employees.
