Jury selection for the former ballerina’s case is expected to wrap up early this week. Ashley Benefield is accused of murdering her husband, Douglas Benefield, but she claims she shot him in self-defense. The judge denied both efforts by the defense.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
