Gregg was convicted of first-degree murder for killing her mother, Ashley Smylie, and shooting her stepfather. During the hearing, defense attorneys raised several issues they said impacted the fairness of the trial, including an argument that Gregg’s life sentence for attempted murder violates Mississippi law. Prosecutors maintained that the trial was conducted fairly and properly. The Mississippi Supreme Court has not yet issued a decision.
