31:37Now PlayingAustralian Senator Fatima Payman has sparked outrage after defending Iran’s treatment of women at an event accused of promoting Islamic Republic propaganda. Speaking at Western Sydney University, Payman dismissed Western criticism, claiming Iran is an “incredible place” where women “have a voice” and “are involved in the democratic process.” Payman said that she was merely “correcting the narrative” and encouraging Iranian women to “share their version of events.” Critics, however, see her statements as a dangerous whitewash of Iran’s brutal gender apartheid. Her remarks, broadcast by Iranian state-run Press TV, were slammed as “hypocrisy” by the advocacy group AUSIRAN, which condemned the event as “flagrantly supporting the regime’s misrepresentation of women’s rights.” The backlash was so fierce that New South Wales Minister for Women Jodie Harrison, who had sent a video message for the event, issued a public apology for her involvement, admitting it was “ill-considered.”
