Coskun, who filmed the act as a protest against the Turkish President, was swiftly assaulted by 59-year-old Moussa Kadri, who kicked, spat on him, and attempted to stab him. Despite injuries to his finger, Coskun avoided serious harm, but both men were arrested—Coskun for “intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress” against Islam, and Kadri for assault and weapon possession. “While I was burning the Quran, I was attacked with a knife. The ambulance and the police came,” Coskun posted on X, sharing footage of the incident. The arrest of Coskun has sparked outrage among free speech advocates, with Humanists UK warning, “Burning a religious text should not be a crime... the law should protect individuals and not ideas.” As debates reignite over blasphemy laws in the UK, the case has become a flashpoint in the ongoing battle between freedom of expression and religious respect.
