29:41Now PlayingGovernor Mark Dayton announced his appointment of the first American Indian to the Minnesota Supreme Court at a crowded State Capitol press conference Tuesday, June 28. The Honorable Anne K. McKeig was appointed to the court to replace retiring Associate Justice Christopher Dietzen. The selection is another notable appointment for Governor Dayton, who previously appointed the first African American woman and the first openly gay woman to the state’s highest court. The appointment also shifts the court to a 4-3 female majority.
A descendant of White Earth Nation, Judge McKeig was appointed a District Court Judge by Governor Pawlenty in 2008. Prior, she worked as an Assistant Hennepin County Attorney in the Child Protection Division where she specialized in Indian Child Welfare cases.
Judge McKeig remarked, “Under Governor Dayton, more Minnesotans can look at judges and see themselves in the faces of those judges, adding to the accessibility of the court, and embracing the diversity that makes Minnesota great.”
Following the press conference, Governor Dayton fielded questions from reporters about his upcoming trip to Croatia, a possible special session, and the Supreme Court’s ruling on Texas abortion restrictions.
