Proposing Compromise for Special Session

In the wake of the vetoed 2016 omnibus tax bill, Governor Mark Dayton proposed compromise as the key to finishing the work of the 89th legislative session. At a press conference on Tuesday, June 7, Governor Dayton began by asking legislators to come back and finish their work. Despite efforts on Monday by the House Republican Caucus to pressure the Governor to sign the tax bill and fix the $101 million dollar wording mistake by a letter of legislative intent, the Governor allowed the June 6 11:59 P.M. deadline to pass, resulting in a "pocket veto."

Senate Minority Leader David Hann released a statement following the press conference: “We are willing to hold a special session. We agree with Gov. Dayton’s requests in the tax relief bill, and we should pass the bipartisan compromise transportation and infrastructure bill that was agreed to on the last day of session. We are not going to rehash the whole session by repeating negotiations on half a billion dollars of new spending demands."

A meeting between legislative leaders and the Governor is schedule for Tuesday afternoon, June 7.
