27:53Now PlayingIn statements to the press, African-American leaders are reiterating their belief that incidences of police violence toward black men are systemic in the United States, and at a press conference Thursday afternoon, Governor Mark Dayton agreed that race was likely a factor in the death of 32-year-old motorist Philando Castile. The officer-involved shooting on Wednesday evening followed on the heels of an incident where police shot and killed an unarmed black man in Baton Rouge, La., and has sparked further national scrutiny of racial profiling and untoward violence by law enforcement.
The deadly shooting of Philando Castile in Falcon Heights has made national and international news due, in part, to a live video streamed by Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, as he took his final breaths. Governor Dayton expressed regret for this tragedy and vowed that justice will be done. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the case, and the St. Anthony police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. Governor Dayton and Congressional leaders have requested an investigation from the Department of Justice.
