18:58Now PlayingGovernor Mark Dayton and legislative leaders began the next step in the legislative budget process by developing a framework for reaching a final budget agreement. This week, legislative conference committees adopted bills that reflect the Republican priorities for budget and policies, and now leaders and Dayton must reach an accord before May 23rd, the legislative session deadline.
Senate Majoirty Leader Paul Gazelka and House Speaker Kurt Daudt both urged Governor Dayton to reach agreement on budget targets for the various budget areas, including tax reductions, transportation, education, health and human services funding. As a result of their disussions Wednesday, Dayton and the leaders will first attempt to find agreement on funding and policy changes for higher education and agriculture.
Governor Dayton expressed concern over the number of polices included in the budget bills, citing 609 separate policies. He said that it will be difficult for leaders to negotiate their differences on the dollar amounts for each area without policies; however, he did not call for all of the policy provisions to be removed.
