1:29:13Now PlayingOn a 35 to 29 vote, the Minnesota Senate approved a bill that would prohibit public Medical Assistance funds from being used for abortion services. HF 809, sponsored by Senator Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, passed the House earlier this session and will be sent to the governor.
In explaining her bill, Kiffmeyer said that the majority of Minnesotans oppose abortions, and "being forced to pay for it through taxpayers dollars is extremely bothersome and unjust."
Speaking in opposition to the bill, Senator Chris Eaton said that the bill discriminates against people because of their income and their type of insurance. "You shouldn't be able to discriminate against what healthcare you pay for just because someone is poor," she said.
The Senate also advanced a bill, HF 312, sponsored by Senator Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, that would require the licensing and regulation of abortion clinics performing 10 or more abortions per month.
