7:46Now PlayingA bill designating July 16 as Atomic Veterans Day won the unanimous support of the Senate Monday, May 8. Sponsored by Senator Andrew Mathews, R-Milaca, the measure is intended to recognize the veterans involved in the testing and dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nakasagi.
According to Mathews, Atomic Veterans would also include those who sailed and repaired nuclear powered ships and submarines. It would also apply to veterans involved in radiation cleanup, such as the Enewetak Atoll radiation cleanup.
Mathews explained that July 16 was chosen as the date because it marks July 16, 1945, the date the first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico under the code name "Trinity."
