11:06Now PlayingSenate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka and Deputy Leader Michelle Benson met with the media Thursday, May 2, to outline the next steps in negotiating a final budget agreement by May 20th, the final day of the 2019 session.
One of the first steps, Gazelka explained, is for the Governor and leaders to agree on an overall budget target. According to Gazelka, Senate Republican are proposing a 5 percent budget increase, while Governor Walz sets an 8.5 percent budget hike and the House DFL is proposing a 9 percent increase.
Among the many provision differences that need to be resolved is whether the state should continue the two percent health care provider tax, which would bring in about $919 million dollars over two years. Benson said that discussion needs to be linked to a review on the impact of the Governor's proposed OneCare program, which would extend medical assistance to more individuals and possibly harm hospital revenue.
Some conference committees will begin meeting Friday to resolve differences between the Senate and House budgets. Gazelka said more time is needed by nonpartisan staff to develop comparisons of the two proposals.
