23:52Now PlayingSenate Republican leaders addressed the media Thursday, May 9, to outline the budget differences between their caucus, Governor Walz and House DFL members.
According to Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, Senate Republicans are proposing to spend $47.7 billion dollars over the next two years, which is $2.2 billion dollars over the amount currently being spent. In comparison, the House DFL caucus is proposing a $49.8 billion dollar two-year budget, and Governor Walz has put forward a $49.3 billion dollar plan. The Department of Administration, in its February Budget Forecast, outlined a two- year budget amount of $47.4 billion dollars should no change be enacted in current law.
As for taxation, Gazelka said that Senate Republicans only support a $20 million dollar fee increase on opiate manufacturers. The fee increase would fund a variety of efforts to combat the state's opioid addiction crisis. In comparison, he said, House DFL members are calling for a total of $4.7 billion dollars in new taxes and fees, while Governor Walz has proposed $4.2 billion dollars in tax and fee increases.
The legislature is set to adjourn May 20, the deadline to enact a two-year budget plan before a special session is required.
