3:31Now PlayingAs Karnataka is set to hit its peak with a rise in COVID-19 cases, 42000 ASHA workers across the state have launched a strike and will be boycotting their duties across the state of Karnataka from today. The workers are demanding that they are paid 12000 rupees a month including their honorarium and that they are provided with sufficient PPE kits to work on the frontline. The ASHA workers have been the backbone of the healthcare system in Karnataka, especially during the pandemic. From surveying 1.29 crore households in the state to risking their lives by screening patients for COVID-19 symptoms to directly coming in contact with the infected patients, the ASHAs have done it all. Despite multiple reassurances, talks with the government over the past one week have not yielded any results and the workers are left with no option but to strike. In fact, it was only recently that the Union Health Ministry had appreciated their work as active members of Local Task Force and their work along with the screening teams in Fever Clinics, Swab Collection Centres as well as international and inter-state check post.
