3:13Now PlayingFrom what APMC traders are saying: At the Lasalgaon market today, the average price of onions crossed Rs.30 which is a steep rise. Prices of onions have been on the rise since August and with the average price touching Rs 30, it meant a sharp increase
Due to heavy rains in North Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, fresh crops of onions that were supposed to hit Maharashtra (also other states) have been damaged. Markets are currently using available stock of onions.
Farmers in Lasalgaon have opposed this move saying it will dampen their returns on the produce.
At the same time, there was a huge demand for onions of India from other countries including Dubai, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
To ensure prices of onions don't escalate further, export has been banned. This is also to keep the available stock of onions within the country.
The current wholesale price of onion: Rs.30
Retail: Not exceeding Rs.40.
