2:47Now PlayingThe Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of stealing electronic voting machines and rigging votes in Assam's second phase of Assembly elections. Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress General Secretary, posted a video on Twitter on Thursday purporting to show BJP MLA Krishnendu Paul transporting EVMs in his car. In the 45-second video, EVMs can be seen inside a white jeep. According to a man who is not in the frame, the vehicle belongs to Paul.
Senior Assam-based journalist Atanu Bhuyan was the first to tweet the widely circulated video, reporting that the incident had made the "situation tense in Patharkandi." The BJP and the Election Commission have yet to respond to the allegations. Gandhi denounced the alleged malpractice, saying it was past time for the Election Commission to act decisively on the BJP's rigging allegations. She also called for a "serious re-evaluation" of the use of electronic voting devices by all national parties.
