11:28Now PlayingAfter claiming that there have been neither oxygen deaths nor farmer deaths, the Union government is now saying that there have been no manual scavenging deaths in India in the last 5 years. The Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment said this in the Rajya Sabha while replying to a question tabled by Congress MPs Mallikarjun Kharge. Earlier in February this year, the government had informed the parliament that 340 people had dies due to manual scavenging. In the past, the government has differentiated between deaths due to manual scavenging and those that have occurred while cleaning sewers.
