Just ahead of Diwali, the national capital has entered the ‘very poor’ air quality category, for the first time this season. While experts believe that the Diwali crackers may worsen the situation, cities continue to choke on hazardous air quality. While the contribution of farm fires in Delhi's air pollution has remained low this season so far due to heavy rainfall in October, the scenario is likely to change post Diwali. SAFAR has predicted that the air quality index for the capital may slip into the ‘severe’ category. Several states and courts had already banned sale, purchase and usage of crackers, weeks before the festivities began. Even then the quality of air to breathe remains in the harmful category.
