2:16Now PlayingAs per the latest news coming on Mirror Now, it is being reported that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's move to try and become the chancellor of her state’s government-run universities, replacing governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has sparked a fresh row.
On May 26, the West Bengal state cabinet, unanimously passed a resolution in favour of Mamata being made the chancellor. Earlier, in December last year, a tug of war ensued between Dhankhar and education minister Bratya Basu regarding control over the VCs.
The governor, as chancellor, has the power to order an inquiry into any university matter and can compel VCs to take action as deemed fit. He can issue directions to universities in the administrative and academic interests and can transfer officers, teachers and assets from one university to another.
