Both Ganguly and Shah's first terms on the board ended earlier in September due to the mandatory 'cooling off period,' which can now be changed. According to the BCCI's constitution, an office bearer must serve a three-year cooling-off period between two consecutive terms in either the state association or the BCCI, or both. Ganguly was president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in 2014 before being appointed to the BCCI, and Jay Shah has been an office bearer in the Gujarat Cricket Association since 2013.
