0:45Now PlayingWe discovered this whale fall in the Strait of Gibraltar earlier this year. It could be a pilot whale or beaked whale. Our scientists were interested in sampling the bacterial community around the whale.
PS: We say "octopuses" are among the first to arrive at the whale fall. This tends to set people off in the comments. "Isn't it octopi?" Yes, octopi is an accepted plural. So is octopuses. And so is the much less common octopodes. Octopi is how you would pluralize a Latin word. But octopus is derived from Greek, which is where octopodes comes in. And because "octopus" has been adopted into English, pluralizing it with the -es ending is also accepted.
