They are one of the most abundant vertebrates on the planet with their biomass exceeding that of all other fish in the deep sea combined. Lanternfish are so numerous they appear as a distinct layer on echo sounders - a phenomenon known as the deep scattering layer. In the Red Sea, the abundance of these fish is something of a mystery as the basin was traditionally thought of as “unproductive." Carlos Duarte, chief scientist of the expedition, will investigate the masses of lanternfish that have been discovered to see if he can discover the secret to their success.
