0:23Now PlayingRight now on our Around Africa Expedition with OceanQuest, we are exploring the Nola Seamount in Cabo Verde. Local researchers from iMAR (Instituto Do Mar) are onboard the OceanXplorer working in tandem with three local Cabo Verde scientists and other international scientists on the research vessel METEOR led by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. This joint scientific operation between these two ships allows a multitude of oceanographic tools to be utilized to better understand this unique region. Along with creating high resolution maps and collecting geological samples, we’re also surveying the marine biodiversity and oceanography to identify key species and critical habitats around the seamount.
This research will provide baselines for long term monitoring of this region and provide new insights into seamounts roles in local ecosystems.
