Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, Keller lost both her sight and hearing due to illness when she was just 19 months old.

Initially, Keller communicated using home signs until the age of seven, when she met Anne Sullivan, her teacher and lifelong companion. Sullivan played a pivotal role in teaching Keller language, including reading and writing. Keller's education continued at both specialized and mainstream schools, culminating in her graduation from Radcliffe College at Harvard University, where she became the first deaf-blind person in the U.S. to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Keller was a prolific writer, authoring 14 books and numerous speeches and essays on a wide range of topics, from animals to Mahatma Gandhi. She was a staunch advocate for disability rights, women's suffrage, labor rights, and global peace. In 1909, she joined the Socialist Party of America and was a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Her autobiography, The Story of My Life (1903), details her education and time with Sullivan and was later adapted into a play by William Gibson, which was then made into a film titled The Miracle Worker. Keller's birthplace is designated as a National Historic Landmark and has been preserved as a house museum since 1954, which hosts an annual "Helen Keller Day."
