Quintus Horatius Flaccus (December 8, 65 BC – November 27, 8 BC), commonly known as Horace, was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). The rhetorician Quintilian praised Horace's Odes as the only Latin lyrics worth reading, noting, "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."

In addition to his lyric poetry, Horace crafted elegant hexameter verses in his Satires and Epistles, as well as caustic iambic poetry in his Epodes. His hexameters are both amusing and serious, characterized by a friendly tone. The ancient satirist Persius remarked that "as his friend laughs, Horace slyly puts his finger on his every fault; once let in, he plays about the heartstrings."

Horace's career unfolded during a pivotal time in Roman history, marked by the transition from a republic to an empire. After serving as an officer in the republican army and being defeated at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, he was befriended by Maecenas, Octavian's right-hand man in civil affairs.

This connection positioned Horace as a spokesman for the new regime. Some commentators view his relationship with the regime as a delicate balance, where he maintained a significant measure of independence, describing him as "a master of the graceful sidestep." Others, however, see him as, in John Dryden's words, "a well-mannered court slave."
