Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, and writer, often seen as the first Christian existentialist. He is best known for his ideas on personal choice, faith, and the individual's relationship with God.
Kierkegaard's work focused on the struggles of living as an individual in a world where people often follow social norms and abstract ideas. He emphasized the importance of personal commitment and faith over objective, scientific knowledge.
Unlike many philosophers of his time, he was critical of organized religion, especially the state-controlled Church of Denmark, and believed that true Christianity was about a personal, subjective relationship with God.
He used different pseudonyms to write from various viewpoints and explore complex philosophical ideas. One of his key themes was the difference between "subjective" truths (personal beliefs and feelings) and "objective" truths (facts and observable realities).
He also wrote about concepts like "angst" (a kind of existential anxiety), the "knight of faith" (someone who fully commits to their beliefs despite uncertainty), and the idea that life can be understood through three stages: aesthetic, ethical, and religious.
Though his work was initially limited to Scandinavia, Kierkegaard's ideas gained widespread influence by the 20th century, impacting philosophy, theology, and culture.
