Bill Russell (1934–2022) was a legendary American basketball player who played center for the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969. He led the team to 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons, making him one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Before joining the NBA, Russell excelled at the University of San Francisco, winning two NCAA championships and earning a gold medal as captain of the U.S. Olympic basketball team in 1956. After being drafted by the St. Louis Hawks, he was traded to the Celtics, where his defensive skills and rebounding dominance helped the team win an NBA-record eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966. Russell was a five-time NBA MVP, 12-time All-Star, and remains second all-time in total rebounds and rebounds per game.
In 1966, Russell became the NBA's first Black head coach while still playing for the Celtics, leading the team to two more championships before retiring in 1969. Afterward, he coached the Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings, worked as a commentator, and wrote several books.
Russell's achievements earned him induction into multiple halls of fame, including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice—for his playing and coaching careers. He was also named to the NBA’s 25th, 35th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary Teams. In 2009, the NBA Finals MVP award was renamed in his honor.
A civil rights advocate, Russell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. After his passing in 2022, the NBA retired his #6 jersey league-wide, a rare honor in sports history, placing him alongside Jackie Robinson and Wayne Gretzky.
