Texas is taking livelihoods away from immigrants who did everything right. 🚛 The Texas Tribune reports that the state has revoked more than six thousand commercial driver’s licenses from legally present non-citizens or people with permission to work, including DACA recipients, asylum seekers, refugees, and people with Temporary Protected Status, or TPS. Many drivers only found out when they checked online or showed up to work. Veronica Viera, a DACA recipient and mother of four, lost the license she earned at Houston Community College and used to haul freight across Texas for years. Her son dropped out of flight school because the family could no longer afford tuition. Eunice Kamanu, an asylum seeker from Kenya, watched her income drop by about seventy-five percent after losing the trucking career she had dreamed about her whole life. Roberto Linares, who has driven trucks for nearly two decades under Temporary Protected Status, now makes six hundred dollars a week as a yard helper. The Trump administration ordered states to crack down, and Texas moved first. Officials claim this is about public safety, but the drivers losing their licenses have clean records, proper training, and years of experience moving the goods that keep this state running. Nationally, up to two hundred thousand immigrant drivers could be pushed off the road, even though the country is already short tens of thousands of truckers. Lawsuits are already underway in California, Florida, and Washington, DC. ⚖️ The people losing these licenses earned them. They followed the rules the system put in front of them, and they built careers that helped keep Texas moving. They are organizing, suing, and refusing to disappear quietly.
