as posted by the channelLeader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey joins us at JOETowers to explain why he's boycotting Trump's state dinner with King Charles. On today's podcast he explained why, despite his deep respect for the monarchy, attending would send the wrong message.
Davey argues that Trump, unlike any other world leader, has the unique leverage to end Israel's occupation of Gaza. By picking up the phone to Netanyahu and threatening to pull US funding, or by pressuring Gulf states to push Hamas to release hostages, Trump could bring the conflict to a halt. Instead, he says, Trump is being welcomed with pomp and ceremony, while the humanitarian catastrophe goes unaddressed.
Davey outlines why he wants to spark a national debate: if Trump has the power to stop the killing of children and bring peace, why isn’t he being held accountable for failing to act? He also discusses his belief that the UK government is failing to confront the scale of atrocities, despite the UN Commission's latest ruling.
Above all, he insists that friendship with the United States should never mean silence in the face of moral failure.
