Starmer defended his move to recognise a Palestinian state as part of a broader roadmap for peace, insisting Hamas can play no role in Palestine’s future. Meanwhile, Trump stressed the urgency of releasing hostages and referenced a past record of securing their freedom, suggesting only he had the leverage to pressure Israel toward deescalation.
The two leaders were also pressed on immigration. Trump boasted of his administration’s success in stopping illegal crossings at the southern border, even suggesting Starmer should deploy the military against small boat crossings in the Channel. Starmer countered by pointing to the UK’s new returns agreements with France and a record number of deportations since his government took office, but emphasised that there is no single “silver bullet” for the crisis.
Questions then turned to the Russia–Ukraine war, with Trump declaring that Putin has “let him down” and insisting the invasion would never have happened under his watch. He claimed millions have died in the conflict and hints at behind-the-scenes efforts to secure “good news” soon.
