as posted by the channelSocial constructivists have been influenced by both “Structure” and “Agency”. They analyze the interplay between both structure and agency and how they influence each other. They maintained that individuals/agents produce and reproduce their world through their actions. The world we live in is a “contextual” world. Social Constructivism talks about the importance of ideas, norms, beliefs, and institutions in foreign policymaking. “Structure” means the ability to influence the behavior of individuals. “Agency” means, acts done by individuals or groups of people.
One of the major assumptions of Social Constructivism are:
1. Neo-neo theories tried to explain certain outcomes in international politics. On the other hand, Social Constructivist tried to “understand” the world of international relations.
2. Social constructivist tries to bridge the gap between structure and agency-based theories.
3. They emphasize the role of norms in people’s behavior. The foreign policy includes not only National Interest but also acceptable behavior in international society.
4. Social constructivism analyses the role of institutions and the process of institutionalization.
5. Discourse plays a central role in social constructivism.
Besides this, social constructivism also talks about The State and Power, Institutions and World Order, International Society, Anarchy, International Regimes, Identity and Community, the importance of identity and Peace and Security. All these things are related to international relations.
