Parliamentary and Presidential form of Government:

Democratic countries in the world are dominated by two kinds of governments. One is a parliamentary form of government and the other is a presidential form of government. The parliamentary or cabinet form of government is the one in which legislature and executive are closely linked with each other. Opposite to this is the presidential form of government. In this form of government, the executive and the legislature are separated from each other.

The parliamentary form of government consists of a titular chief executive. This may be a king as it is in the United Kingdom or it may be a president as is the case in Pakistan and India. The real executive in the parliamentary form of government is the Prime Minister. The Prime minister leads the government and is aided by the members of the cabinet. The members of the cabinet are used to be from the legislature and they are accountable to it. This is the reason why the parliamentary form of government is also known as a responsible form of government. There are several merits of a parliamentary form of government. This includes; harmony between legislature and executive, it ensures responsibility and check autocracy, is flexible, and its great educative value among the many.

On the other hand, the presidential form of government is used to be led by the president itself. The president used to be the real executive. He used to be the head of the state as well as the head of the government. At the top of the presidential system is the president himself. Then there comes legislature. In the United States, the people of America select the president and members of the Congress separately. The congress keeps an eye on the powers of the president. The Senate used to approve all the appointments of the president. The House of Representatives is of two years duration. But the congress cannot pass a vote of no confidence against the president. The president in the United States can only impeached.
