as posted by the channelThe political system of the United Kingdom (UK) comprises its parliament. The parliament has two houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Commons is the lower house of the British parliament. It is popularly elected and represents the people's mandate. On the other hand, the House of Lords is the upper house of the British Parliament and represents the historical elements of the British political system. The House of Commons wields more powers than the House of Lords.
The British constitution is unwritten. There are various sources which contribute to the constitution of the United Kingdom. This includes; Historical documents like the Magna Carta, the Petition of Rights, and the Bill of Rights. Besides this, the Acts of Parliament also play an important role in developing the British constitution. In addition, the courts' decisions are another source of the British constitution. The British constitution plays an important role in the smooth functioning of the political system of the United Kingdom.
There are several political parties in Britain. Most notably, there is a conservative, liberal, and labour parties. The current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, is also from the Labor Party.
The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was established in the year 2009 after the parliament passed an act in the year 2005. Previously, the House of Lords used to be the ultimate court in the UK. The Lord Chancellor used to preside over the House of Lords and used to act as chief law lord. But now, there is a separate supreme court of the UK and the Lord Chancellor does not play its previous role.
