15:28Now PlayingNo matter whether there's a ceasefire to the bombs dropping on Gaza and the rockets flying into Israel, the everyday violence of the occupation remains. Joining Francesca is human rights attorney and Noura Erakat, author of "Justice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine" and co-Founding editor of Jadaliyya, an electronic magazine on the Middle East that combines scholarly expertise and local knowledge.
She explains that while the song remains the same with Israeli aggression, that this latest war is different in that public opinion is changing. There are finally American Democrats in Congress speaking out against atrocities. And thanks to years of organizing, social movements have ensured that the truth about the occupation and the structural racism embedded in the state of Israel is exposed for what it is: apartheid. Erakat also explains that Israel has also helped lose the moral high ground by revealing that it is not interested in any peace process, not interested in a Palestinian state, not interested in sparing civilian lives, and not interested in abiding by international law. So it's really mask off for settler colonialism.
Comedian Matt Lieb also joins to discuss whether President Joe Biden is doing anything different than his predecessor when it comes to the Middle East. Noura explains that it's pretty much par for the course, and no one, certainly not Palestinians, expected him to be that much better on the issue. He continues to gloss over the deaths of Palestinians, the violence at Al-Aqsa mosque by the IDF, and the everyday terror of Israeli settlers haunting and forcibly displacing communities. There's hope on the horizon, but there is much more work to be done.
