10:41Now PlayingWhat’s life like for Palestinians who lived inside Israel’s borders? What happened to Palestinian communities when Zionists established the state of Israel and instead of fleeing, they were allowed to stay? The short answer: Nothing good. Palestinians inside of Israel make up 20 percent of the population, and treated like second-class citizens. Matter of fact, because they are not Jewish, they have an entirely different citizenship status which does not entitle them to the same benefits as others living inside of Israel. Moreover, they — like communities in the West Bank— currently live under Israeli martial law. This allows the IDF to police and patrol with impunity. These cities like Haifa or Lyd, which have traditionally been heralded as “mixed, with Israelis and Palestinians, are disproportionately impoverished and drug-ridden. Not unlike some of the over-policed low-income black and brown neighborhoods in the United States. Now, those cities inside of Israel have been the sites of unrest and violence from far-right Jewish mobs that has been emboldened to attack Palestinian citizens of Israel. Meanwhile, the growth of settlements inside these cities only continues to further outnumber and marginalize the Palestinians who’ve live there for generations.
