Kamala Harris Echoes Trump on Immigration? SAD!

Is this the kind of assignment that Kamala envisioned when she took the VP job? Somehow, I don’t think so… This week, Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech during her official visit to Guatemala that focused on migrants and migration from the region. While there, she gave a distinctly Trumpian speech, telling those assembled, and those watching: “do not come,” stay in their country of origin and not seek refuge in the United States. Never mind the fact that it’s legal to claim asylum in the United States, and never mind the fact that the United States is the primary reason that their region is so destabilized to begin with. The Biden Administration continues to chase the criticism of conservatives, instead of creating their own narratives through new policies more in line with progressive values.

What’s more, just because an American official is saying this on TV, doesn’t mean it’s actually going to change any minds on the ground. This speech was entirely a domestic political stunt to pander to conservatives. Spoiler: They won’t be appeased. Even though the Biden Administration claims that it’s interested in addressing root causes of migration, it’s investing in things like “human smuggling task force”. Correct us if we’re wrong, but that sounds dangerously like more militarism in a region that needs everything but more militarism. Sadly, this new effort in the region probably won’t have any real impact, other than continuing the demonization of migration and refugees.
