When’s America’s Obsession With Guns Going To End?

Is there any tragedy, of any size or emotional intensity, that would make Congress act to limit American gun ownership? If you’ve been alive long enough, you’ve seen incredible tragedy after heartbreaking loss, only for things to continue on like nothing else happened.

Last week, in the Michigan town of Pontiac, a 15 year old sophomore walked into Oxford High School and opened fire, killing at least four students and injuring five. Over the weekend, the mass shooter’s parents were also arrested and charged for basically assisting their son by not doing enough to stop what everyone seemed to know was coming.

There was a mountain of missed warning signs in the student’s history, and in the days since there have been lots of allegations that someone in the community failed. While all that criticism and commentary is important and true, it’s also important to remember that there are more guns in America and there are people, and what we’re seeing here is a direct result of the culture that idolizes folks like Kyle Rittenhouse and vigilantism writ large. These disgusting and sickening mass shootings are unfortunately just another recurring symptom of the rot.
