Why haven’t more countries gotten access to the mRNA vaccine? It’s known as vaccine apartheid and Sarah Lazare, web editor and reporter for In These Times breaks down what it is.
Broadly speaking, vaccine apartheid refers to the incredible disparity in Covid-19 vaccine access that exists between rich countries, like the United States and those in the European Union, and poorer countries, like South Africa. Thanks to international institutions like the World Trade Organization, where policymakers have chosen to preserve intellectual property rights over the fight against COVID, countries in the global south can’t get access to mRNA vaccine recipes to produce their own.
Pharmaceutical companies claim that mRNA vaccines are far too difficult for other countries to produce, but in reality places like India, Argentina, South Africa and others do have robust biotech capabilities and could produce their vaccines should Big Pharma choose to share the goods. But of course they’ve rigged the global economy to protect their profits, no matter whether COVID continues to spread. From a global health perspective, vaccine apartheid is only prolonging and worsening the effects from the global pandemic, and so long as the profit motive is the primary driver of health care, we’re all going to suffer.
