Did A Corporation Do The RIGHT thing for ONCE?

Is this progress or pocket change? In March, Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly made headlines by announcing a cap on the price on insulin at $35. While the price of insulin has risen over 1000 percent in the past few decades, the cost to produce as remained practically the same as it was when the treatment was first discovered over one hundred years ago. This price freeze could potentially save diabetics relying on insulin 70 percent a month on their medication.

Of course, the fact that it costs any money at all is still a radical proposition, outside a hypercapitalist market where health is made to be a scarce commodity. All too common are stories of diabetics rationing their supply of this life sustaining medication to last them until their next paycheck. While this move won’t get rid of that all together, it will be a significant improvement for workers nationwide.

Rafael Shimunov is an artist and activist in Queens, NYC. He helps organize a coalition of Amazon workers, communities, activists and small businesses. Rafael leads an activist art collective called Art V War and is the cohost of Beyond The Pale, NYC radio's home to the Jewish Left.

Maggie Maye is a comedian of UCB who made her late night debut on Conan and was featured on Last Call with Carson Daly and has performed stand up at comedy fests like Just for Laughs SF Sketchfest and SXSW.
