13:43Now PlayingIn September of 2022, Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish Iranian woman, was killed under mysterious circumstances in police custody after being arrested by the morality police. Her death further inflamed already ongoing protests throughout the country, with protests and a government crackdown still ongoing.
Many of these women-led protests decried the morality police for its many abuses of authority and strict rules for women, but the tone grew more explicitly anti-government over time. The government has responded by labeling these as being under the influence of foreign governments and hostile to the people of Iran. Images of the protest have circulated far and wide, however, with small and large acts of defiance like women not wearing a headscarf.
Negar Mortazavi is an award-winning journalist and political commentator, and editor and host of the Iran Podcast, based in Washington DC. She has been covering Iranian and Middle Eastern affairs as well as US foreign policy towards the Middle East for over a decade.
