What Are American Refugees Running From?

Climate change is big, scary, but very real. Unless you’ve been in a once in a 100 year flood or massive fire, you don’t necessarily appreciate just how real it can be. That’s why in his recent book, The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration, author Jacob Bittle spends a great deal of time talking to and sharing the stories from the people who are impacted by climate change right now in real, material ways.

From huge wildfires in California and now buckets of rain and huge snowpacks, the effects of a changing climate run the gambit from wacky to deadly. Climate change is often conceptualized as something that will happen sometime down the road, but even in the United States there are already millions who have felt the effects. International displacement has dominated much of the news coverage on the climate, but internal displacement is rising at an even more rapid rate. Are we paying attention now?
