According to reports, six people, three children and three staff, were killed at a small private Christian school. The three children were all under 9 years old, and the adults had various roles from substitute teacher to janitor. The shooting was carried out by a 28-year-old former student who reportedly identified as trans. According to police reports, the shooter had planned out their attack and had written a manifesto about their actions.
School shootings are an all too normal occurrence in this country. Years after Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas, and Columbine, the ritual of mass death in schools has become a normal affair. An overwhelming majority of school shootings are carried out by cis straight white men, and yet when this is the case the rejoinder we consistently hear is that this tragedy shouldn’t be politicized. In this case, however, Republicans are already frothing with excitement over further criminalizing the trans community over the actions of one lone actor. Of course they are!
