The Associated Press called the race for mayor last night in favor of Brandon Johnson, a progressive former teacher’s union member who vows to close the gap between rich and poor in the city. His opponent, Paul Vallas, conceded the race while trailing by roughly 20,000 votes. We were joined this week by journalist Miles KampfLassin to give us a preview of what was a historic election.
Vallas and Johnson are friends, despite being polar opposites and the race being an intense one. Paul Vallas supported a “stronger” police force, while Johnson wants to fundamentally reshape the city’s relationship with the police, and to fund Chicago Public Schools in ways the CTU has been pushing for. The victory is major, and could mean real economic justice for the city of Chicago.
