It’s unbelieveable the young workers are being exposed to such a fatal and horrible disease. Of course, it’s all about profit. We talk about the standards in place to protect coal miners from black lung.
We invited labor journalist Kim Kelly to talk with us about her recent investigation into the resurgence of black lung in Appalachia. As Kelly reports according to recent NIOSH data, black lung has become more prevalent and is “impacting younger miners and those who have spent less time underground much more quickly and much more severely.” Many experts agree that if businesses followed proper safety standards, workers could be safe from inhaling both toxic dust and strangel, silica. Yes the stuff in those little DO NOT EAT packages. Miners are inhaling far too much of it and it’s killing them. The industry could take steps to change it so why haven’t they?
We spoke with Kelly about how and why this happening, what politicians can do to help, and about misconceptions the public may hold about coal miners.
