The Fentanyl Crisis Is Thanks To FAILED Drug Policies

The Drug Enforcement Agency is messing up. As it tries to combat the fentanyl drug crisis, which is very real and claims over 100,000 lives A YEAR, the DEA hasn't gone after the root cause of the problem. That's in part because they helped create it.

In response to the opioid epidemic, the DEA and the FDA have cracked down on the use of prescription opiates like Oxycontin, the drug that Purdue Pharma pushed ceaselessly on patients even for minor pain. They knew it was severely addictive and they did it anyway. The crackdown on over-prescribing is good, but as journalist Maia Szalavitz explains, it was an over-correction that has cost so many lives. As users were kicked off their meds, they turned to street drugs at the same time that fentanyl was making its dangerous debut.

Fentanyl is hundreds of times more potent and powerful than even heroine or morphine, she explains. That has led to a massive wave of overdoses. We've simply replaced epidemics while not actually addressing safe treatment strategies on a national level.

Meanwhile the right fearmongers about migrants bringing in fentanyl when the majority of it is trafficked by citizens who are known to border patrol. Finally, why is there a simultaneous prescription shortage for much-needed drugs like Adderall? Francesca has some personal gripes.
