According to a new survey by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Stein is polling ahead of Kamala Harris in key swing states such as Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin. In Michigan, the state with the largest Arab and Muslim-American population in the country, 40 percent of those polled by CAIR said they’ll vote for Stein.
Stein, a Green Party candidate, won one percent of the overall vote in 2016 in the race against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In both 2016 and today, the Green party candidate has been accused of taking votes away from the Democrat. Though this claim and the concept of a “protest vote” are an ongoing conversation to have on the left, this recent polling does seem to imply that Stein’s name on the ballot may impact the results in swing states.
Stein has tried to capitalize off of the discontent of Muslim voters and young people of Harris’s inaction in ending the genocide in Gaza, even offering to have a Palestinian vice presidential pick. This has bothered the Democratic coalition looking to rally voters around Harris, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Nobody needs talking points to know Jill Stein hasn’t won so much as a bingo game in the last decade and if you actually give a damn about people, you organize, build power and infrastructure, and win,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez on X on Thursday.
