This week Luigi Mangione was taken into custody for allegedly shooting the UnitedHealthcare CEO in midtown Manhattan, as some online glibly celebrated the healthcare bosses death and lusted over 26-year old Mangione. This same week 26-year old Daniel Penny was acquitted by jury in a criminally negligent homicide case. Earlier this year Penny killed Jordan Neely, a Black homeless man riding the subway who was experiencing a mental health episode.
“Daniel Penny is free after killing a man victim to the system. What of Luigi Mangione, who is suspected of killing a man symbolic of it?” wrote Prem Thakker for Zeteo. This irony was lost on many media outlets and pundits who slammed people for joking about Mangione's shooting.
“These implicit and explicit efforts to treat the alleged killer with compassion and understanding, to elevate the profile of Luigi Mangione, to celebrate him as a martyr—what it does, it simply puts more Americans at risk,” said Laura Ingraham on Fox News this week, who went on to treat Penny’s case with care and understanding. Ironic much?
