The now famous words of the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter, “Delay, Deny, Defend,” caused a national stir in the days between the shooting and Luigi Mangione’s eventual capture in Pennsylvania. Following last week’s events, one woman in Florida had been on the phone with her insurance company after they denied a claim. She ended the phone call by repeating a version of Luigi's words, vaguely threatening the work, and adding, “You people are next.” Next thing you know, cops showed up to arrest the Florida woman and a judge set her bail at $100,000.
While the media has embraced its role to scold anyone who appears to hold the CEO shooter in high regard, law enforcement and the judicial apparatus have joined in to ensure that no person dares challenge the legitimacy of their insurance company. It appears that denying your claim isn’t violence, but words that make your insurance agent uncomfortable sure are. And meanwhile while people online get death threats all the time, no cops show up at those people doors… interesting, huh.
